Wow. Just... wow.
There's not a lot people can do or say that will shock or surprise me. Honestly I don't know if I'm more surprised or disappointed either. I will also add that I notice things. I notice a lot of things. I'm very aware of what's going on around me at all times. I don't expect that other people notice what I notice but I do expect them to use their common sense. It's kind of a well-known joke that professors can be too smart for their own good. It's that book smart over street smart thing. The absent-minded professor, etc. They're more concerned with publishing and don't tend to pick up on every day things. It comes off as absolutely clueless which frustrates me but I have to remind myself that it's just the way they are. Well when safety of students is involved, I cannot excuse it anymore. I don't care that the building in which we reside is the joke of the campus. This building is a mess and everyone knows it. However, when a floor is buckled (that was recently fixed) and students trip over it daily, it is not acceptable to just assume that's the way it should be or that there's no hope of it being fixed. I can just picture one of our overly drowsy students tripping over the hump in the floor and hitting his/her head on the nearby desk. All this school needs is a lawsuit.
I had to ask my boss to send out an email to the department to let us know if they ever notice things like a buckled floor. He had to do it because I'm in such a state right now that there's no way my email to them wouldn't come off like I was chastising a bunch of 8 year-olds. Of course it doesn't help that I currently have yet another head cold and am at the end of my, uh, female monthly thing. He's just much more diplomatic than I am anyway. But really, should we have to tell them to speak up if/when the ceiling caves in? Let me add one last thing, if there's even the slightest thing wrong with their offices they speak up immediately.
